Delighted to collaborate with artist and curator, Annette Fernando, on her new exhibition at Making Space on Aberfeldy Street, Poplar.
The result of her 4~week residency, the show uncovers various local histories, including links to Scottish place~names and the heritage of the site as a former Post Office. As part of her research, Annette sent and received letters via a postbox directly outside the gallery.
I was invited to respond through creative writing, exploring ideas around letters, mapping, memory, change and journey. This included a poem based on the 309 bus route, which connects my current home in Bethnal Green to my childhood home on the Aberfeldy Estate ~ an area which continues to face redevelopment.
The final exhibition comprised large-scale drawings, video projections, installations and an immersive soundscape, threading together collaborations and contributions from local residents.
Making Space is a project by Fitzrovia Noir. Responding to locations in transition, their Poplar arts programme is housed by a row of shop units due for demolition.
