Arrivals at Departure

Thrilled to be exhibiting as part of Arrivals Collective, for our new group show at Departure Arts Centre. Alongside fellow artists, designers and writers, I will be sharing objects and interventions from my Breath and Dust series, developed over the past 12 months. These works emerged through a series of discursive workshops with Morphē Arts, exploring what it means to be a creature and an art~maker.

For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. ~ Carl Sagan

This project has emerged from an on~going conversation between eight artists and designers who have sought to return their practice to a level of primordial enquiry. As humans, we constantly seek to articulate our existence through the work of our hands. By contrast, the world around us seems bent on evading interpretation.

What does it mean to be a creature and an art~maker? How can art help to make sense of the world we inhabit? These questions have been central to the discussion between this collective of artists and designers over the last 12 months. With this new exhibition at Departure, they have come together to showcase their findings and to invite more voices into the conversation.

The work is an eclectic mix, with investigations into painting, printmaking, animation, drawing, textiles and the written word. The varying emphasis on concept and aesthetics makes the group representative of the exciting range of work being produced by young artists and designers across the UK.

Jane Broadbent, Roseanna Clare, Clare Cronin, Michael Dryden, Kirsty Kerr, Andrew Khatouli, Piero Regnante and Hannah Rowe began their journey together at Departure in Autumn 2012 and are excited to return to the site as a fully functioning collective in order to exhibit their most recent work. An accompanying publication that features more original art and design around the theme of ‘Creatures’ is currently on sale from Departure Café.
