One Wall Gallery is a community exhibition space dedicated to platforming local artists, based at The Beehive, a café and social enterprise in Bethnal Green.
Located within a new multi~purpose site, a project of Bethnal Green Mission Church, the gallery launched with the building opening in 2018. The inaugural exhibition, COME AND REST was a photographic series paying homage to the church’s ongoing legacy.
One Wall Gallery was established as part of The Beehive’s community engagement with artists in the East End, London’s creative hub. Since its opening, I’ve curated a programme showcasing local artists, illustrators, designers and filmmakers, including Aga Robak, Annette Fernando, Francesca Willow, Husna Parvin, Noriko Michigami, Paul Anderson, Rachel Finegan, SM Asad, Sophie Siem, Vera Akatoah, Wendy Rolt and Will Alcock. See the One Wall Gallery exhibition programme here.
The space has hosted guest exhibitions, including Show Your Colours (2020) by the Kisimul Group, a service for young people with complex learning difficulties; and public notice (2020) by Emerging Fields, a project that placed artworks in the windows of East London independent businesses; as well as a range of creative workshops and events.
Alongside the One Wall Gallery, I researched the Bethnal Green Mission Church archive to curate A Short History ~ an exhibition of photographs and documents mounted for their new building opening ceremony and the Open House London Festival in 2019. This research process included the development of COME AND REST, a series of public interventions informed by the demolition and rebuilding of the site.
